What is Sedative Dentistry?

At Geelong Dental Group, we understand that sometimes, visiting a dentist can make you nervous or even cause anxiety. For this, we offer IV sedation, where a patient is put into a twilight state monitored by the anaesthetist and registered nurse. Happy Gas is also another form of sedation that can alleviate anxiety.

How is IV Sedation Administered?

Before administering, our experts will evaluate your medical history to ensure you are suitable for IV sedation. Sedatives are administered intravenously to induce a state of deep relaxation or calmness. An anaesthetist or a trained dentist will put in the IV line and administer sedation. Once the sedative starts to work, you will be in a semi-conscious state and relaxed enough to have your anaesthetic administered.

During the dental procedure, professionals constantly monitor blood pressure and measure your pulse and oxygen. If you’re having several different procedures, the sedation may be adjusted accordingly.

Is It Safe to Use Happy Gas?

Many people have the belief that Happy Gas might make them do or say something embarrassing, but this is not the case at all. Furthermore, Happy Gas is scientifically proven to be safe for both adults and children. To administer the desired level of Happy Gas, a cannula will be placed on your nose where you can simply breathe in and let the gas take effect. It is odourless and does not cause any irritation to your airway system.

The calm and relaxed feeling will only last for the time during which the cannula is placed on your nose, which will be the duration of your dental treatment. When treatment is completed, and the cannula is removed, the euphoric (happy) feeling will wear off within a maximum of two minutes. This allows you to drive and proceed with your daily activities.
