Root Canal

A common myth is that root canal treatment is painful; a root canal doesn’t cause pain, it relieves it! Inside the tooth, under the white enamel there is a hard layer called the dentin, which has a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and helps to grow the root of your tooth during development.

Root canal therapy also known as endodontic treatment is aimed to save and retain teeth. Our dentists will examine the teeth thoroughly before performing the root canal treatment. Saving the natural teeth with root canal treatment has many advantages:

  • Efficient chewing
  • Normal biting force and sensation
  • Natural appearance
  • Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain

Treatment Procedure

Endodontic treatment is a very safe procedure and usually can be completed in two or three appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth and your circumstances. You can expect a comfortable experience during and after your appointment. Root canal treatments will involve a few stages:

  • During the initial appointment also known as the emergency stage, the diseased pulp will be removed and the canal medicated to provide pain relief. In a fully developed tooth, the tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it.
  • You will then return to see our dentist for further cleaning and shaping of the canal to ensure the infection is cleared.
  • During the final visit, the root canal is then filled with a filling material to enclose the canal permanently from future infection.
  • Finally, a crown (cap) is placed on the tooth to increase the strength and life span of the treated tooth.

Our dentists always make sure to follow up your root canal treatment and answer any questions or concerns post-treatment to provide reassurance and peace of mind.
